Stax Talent is working with a well-funded deep tech company in the energy sector to hire a CAD and design engineer.

The opportunity

Our client is developing large-scale superconducting magnet systems for a next-generation energy application. They design and build hardware at every scale, from prototype test rigs to magnet assemblies and larger systems.

Behind each of those is a set of design data: models, drawings, calculations, simulations, tolerances and material choices. You’ll own that data from the first concept sketch through to the delivered part. This is a broad, hands-on role with real influence over how the company manages design engineering.

What you’ll be doing

  • Designing complete parts and assemblies in CAD, from concept to manufacturing drawings.
  • Running design simulations in ANSYS, COMSOL or similar.
  • Driving designs independently: solving problems and selecting materials and standard components.
  • Helping the team specify and order parts.
  • Keeping CAD data, bills of materials and revisions organised.
  • Supporting assembly and testing in the lab, and updating designs based on what you learn.

What we’re looking for

  • A degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, a Techniker qualification with design experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong skills in a 3D CAD system such as SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA or similar.
  • The ability to carry out engineering calculations for form, fit and function.
  • A thorough understanding of tolerancing for real manufactured hardware.
  • A track record of designing parts and assemblies that were actually built, with toleranced drawings to standard.
  • Confidence making and documenting decisions with incomplete information, in clear written and spoken English.

Highly relevant experience

  • Vacuum or cryogenic system and component design.
  • FEA in COMSOL or another simulation tool.
  • Magnets or other electromagnetic hardware.
  • PDM or PLM systems.
  • Ownership of the full design, build and measure cycle.

We welcome applications from both early-career and experienced engineers, including those coming from scientific instruments, aerospace, medical devices or general mechanical engineering.

What’s on offer

  • The chance to shape design engineering practices and data management from the ground up.
  • Varied, hands-on work on first-of-a-kind hardware.
  • A competitive package, modern office and lab facilities, and some flexibility to work remotely.
